120207 PETCORE APPROVES MITSUBISHI GAS CHEMICAL’S NYLON MXD6 IN DARK

1. For the test dark coloured monolayer barrier bottles were used containing 9 %2005
Mitsubishi Gas Chemical is a producer of Nylon MXD-6, a barrier material used in packaging
applications.
A blend of MXD6 and PET is used to reduce the gas permeability of PET bottles; Bottles
made with this material composition have been tested following the Petcore-Diolen bottle to
fibre protocol
of Nylon MXD-6
A mix containing 20% of the Nylon-PET blend fulfils the specification laid down in the bottle to
fibre protocol. Petcore did not evaluate other applications for this material as recycled dark
coloured bottles are mainly restricted to the fibre market.
Therefore Petcore gives endorsement only for bottle to fibre applications for MXD6/PET
blends in dark coloured bottles in up to 10% of recycled PET to Fibre market (taking into
consideration local accumulation effects)
Petcore recognises the need for innovation, but the introduction of different barrier systems is
cumulative in the recycling stream potentially causing the resulting R-PET to be less
acceptable in the market. In this instance Petcore will re-evaluate its position with regard to
this technology and its effect on the quality of the R-PET in the market.
